Delivering anger management assemblies in schools after serious incidents

After a recent incident at a South London secondary school, WMS was invited to deliver interactive, drama-based anger management assemblies for 145 Year 8 students. Huge thanks to Wandsworth Councils‘ Community Safety Service for commissioning this work.

The assemblies focused on helping students understand what happens in their bodies and brains during conflict, and how to respond more calmly when emotions run high. Together, we explored anger, early warning signs, and simple ways to pause, breathe and think before reacting. Every student left with practical tools they can use in everyday situations: at school, at home, and beyond.

Why anger management assemblies matter for schools

Anger management assemblies give pupils clear, age-appropriate skills to manage disagreements before they escalate. In these sessions, students learn that anger is normal and that they have choices about how they respond. We teach simple emotional regulation tools (including breathing and grounding), alongside communication skills that reduce misunderstandings and conflict. Pupils learn how to listen more carefully, notice the impact of tone and body language, and express themselves clearly using I-statements (“I feel… because… please can you/we…”).

Each student leaves with a printed 8-page booklet to take home, reinforcing the learning with practical tools they can also use in class – including the Traffic Light Tool (Stop–Calm–Go), the Anger Iceberg and the Stress Bucket. For schools, this means calmer interactions, fewer flashpoints, and students who feel more confident managing difficult moments.

“I learnt that it’s okay to be angry and that it happens to everyone. I even learnt a new breathing technique to help me when I’m angry.” – Year 8 student

Designed for large groups, without losing impact

These anger management resolution assemblies work particularly well for large groups. At this school, we delivered the sessions to groups of up to 75 students, keeping them engaged and involved throughout. For schools, this means a consistent message delivered to whole year groups in a time-efficient way, without compromising on depth or quality.
