Thanks to funding from the Wimbledon Foundation, WMS is bringing its award-winning peer mediation programme to Merton – completely free of charge.
WMS is a non-profit conflict resolution and training provider, helping schools across London build calmer classrooms and stronger pupil relationships.
We’ve been running peer mediation in Wandsworth since 2019, training over 200 young mediators – and now, thanks to generous support from the Wimbledon Foundation, we’re expanding this work to Merton.
How it works
We train 15–30 pupils in Years 4–6 to become peer mediators. They take turns on the playground every day, helping younger children talk through small conflicts and come up with their own solutions. This can be fallouts over game rules to friendship misunderstandings. Anything serious (like bullying or safeguarding issues) is referred to dedicated staff straight away.
Mediators stay in role until they leave for secondary school, often becoming school leaders and role models in the process.
What’s included
Everything you need to set up a successful programme:
- Intro workshops for whole classes
- 3-day training for selected pupils
- Launch event
- Staff briefing
- Follow-up support and top-up session
- Ongoing access to resources (tabards, forms, rotas etc.)
Proven impact
This is a tried-and-tested programme that’s already running in many Wandsworth schools, and participated in the Civil Mediation Council’s nationawide research. Teachers consistently report fewer behaviour issues after lunch, more confident pupils, and stronger relationships across the school.
Peer mediators gain practical skills they’ll use for life: listening, empathy, problem-solving and leadership. One pupil told us:
“I enjoyed getting more patient and confident in talking to new people.”
Schools see calmer classrooms, improved focus, and less time spent by staff resolving playground fallouts.
A Year 5 teacher recently shared:
“Less issues are being brought to teachers’ attention after lunch time or to playtime staff during lunch time.”
